Rules & Flow

The game itself: tiles, wall, turns, the Charleston, jokers, kongs, dead hands, scoring.

AQ-001What is American mahjong?#

American mahjong is a four-player tile game in which you win by matching one exact line on that year's NMJL card, not by building any hand you like.

4 notes · 3 pages · 4 phrasings
  • You hold thirteen tiles and draw and discard one at a time until fourteen match a printed line.
  • Three things separate it from Asian variants: eight jokers, the Charleston, and an annual card.
  • Groups are identical tiles only — pungs, kongs, quints, sextets. No chows.
  • Groups you claim sit face up on your rack for the table to read.

AQ-002Is American mahjong the same as Chinese mahjong?#

No. They share the tile family but not the rules, so instincts from Chinese, Hong Kong or riichi play will mislead you.

4 notes · 2 pages · 7 phrasings
  • A Chinese hand is four melds and a pair scored by faan; an American hand is one exact card line.
  • No chows here, and eight jokers that work only inside groups of three or more.
  • Every hand opens with the Charleston, a structured pass with no Chinese equivalent.
  • 152 tiles rather than 144, and scoring is read off the card, not counted.

AQ-003Why can't I chow in American mahjong?#

Because NMJL play has no chows at all — every group is made of identical tiles, so 2-3-4 in one suit is not a legal set.

3 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • You may claim a discard only to complete a pung, kong, quint or sextet, or to declare Mah Jongg.
  • Consecutive numbers printed on the card, like 222 333 444, are three separate pungs, not a run; each one is built the ordinary way.
  • If you learned riichi or Hong Kong rules, this is the first habit to unlearn.

AQ-004How many tiles are in an American mahjong set?#

152: 108 suited tiles, 28 honors, 8 flowers and 8 jokers.

4 notes · 3 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Suited: dots, bams and craks, numbered 1 to 9, four copies of each — 36 per suit.
  • Honors: 16 winds (four each North, East, West, South) and 12 dragons (four each red, green, soap).
  • Flowers: eight tiles in four designs, each printed twice. Jokers: eight wild tiles.
  • That is a 144-tile Chinese set plus the eight jokers. Blank spares some sets include are not part of the count.

AQ-005What are the extra tiles in an American set?#

The eight jokers. Everything else in the 152 has a counterpart in a 144-tile Chinese set, flowers included.

4 notes · 2 pages · 3 phrasings
  • Jokers are the only wild tiles and the only group a Chinese set lacks.
  • Flowers are not extra: Chinese sets also carry eight flower and season tiles, but there they are bonuses drawn and replaced.
  • In American play flowers stay in your rack and count toward the hand.
  • A 136-tile Japanese set drops flowers entirely, so it cannot play American.

AQ-006How do you build the wall?#

Shuffle all 152 tiles face down, and each player builds 38 of them into a wall two tiles high and nineteen stacks long; the four walls then form a square.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • 38 × 4 = 152, so every tile is in the wall — nothing is set aside.
  • The small push that closes the square is called the curtsy.
  • Four racks sit outside that square, one per player, so the footprint is an ordinary table.
  • The dealer breaks the wall with the dice.

AQ-007Who deals first, and how is East chosen?#

Everyone rolls, and the highest roll takes East and deals the first hand.

4 notes · 2 pages · 8 phrasings
  • East is the dealer's seat and starts with fourteen tiles; the other three take thirteen.
  • Dice also decide where the wall is broken for the deal.
  • After that the deal rotates around the table, one seat per hand.
  • If a hand ends as a wall game, the player to the current dealer's right becomes the new East.

AQ-008How many tiles do I hold, and how do I set up my rack?#

Thirteen tiles in play, fourteen when you draw and when you declare — East starts with fourteen, the others with thirteen.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Stand your tiles upright on a rack; American players never hold tiles in hand.
  • Groups you call go face up on the top ledge of the rack, where the table can read them.
  • After the Charleston you should still have thirteen: you passed three and received three.
  • Recount after every pung and kong; a drifting count is the most common dead hand.

AQ-009What happens on a turn, and which way does play go?#

You draw one tile from the wall, then discard one — or claim the tile somebody else just discarded. Play then passes to the player on your right.

4 notes · 1 page · 4 phrasings
  • That loop is the whole game: one in, one out, until someone declares Mah Jongg.
  • East discards first, before anyone draws.
  • A claim replaces your draw: you take the discard, expose the group, and discard without drawing.
  • Claims close the moment the next player draws.

Also asked as: how does a turn work in mahjong · which direction does mahjong go · clockwise or counterclockwise mahjong · do you draw before you discard

AQ-010What happens when the wall runs out?#

The hand is a wall game — a draw. Nobody wins, nobody pays, and the tiles are reshuffled and redealt.

3 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • With 152 tiles on the table this happens more often than beginners expect, which is why chasing an unlikely hand is a bad trade.
  • The deal moves on: the player to the current dealer's right becomes the new East.
  • A dead hand often plays for a wall game on purpose, since it can no longer win.

AQ-011Do I have to claim a discard immediately?#

Yes. Speak before the next player draws — once that player takes a tile, the discard is dead and your claim is void.

3 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • A discard stays live for one turn only, not for the rest of the round.
  • Say the tile by name as you claim it; naming it wrongly is a dead hand.
  • A quiet or late call is not a call, and you cannot argue the tile back.

Read: Frequently Asked Questions·Glossary

AQ-012Two players want the same discard — who gets it?#

A Mah Jongg call outranks every other claim; if two players want the tile for a group, the player next in turn order after the discarder gets it.

3 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Because play passes to the right, that is the player on the discarder's right.
  • The same order settles pung, kong, quint and sextet claims.
  • Exact tie-break wording varies slightly by table, so settle it before the first deal.

AQ-013What can I call a discard for?#

A pung, a kong, a quint, a sextet, or Mah Jongg — never a chow, and never a pair or a single.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • You must already hold two of the tile for a pung, and three for a kong; you cannot call cold.
  • A quint or sextet needs jokers, since only four copies of any tile exist.
  • Required singles cannot be called for at all, and a pair must be two natural tiles, so neither is a claim.
  • The claimed tile goes on top of your rack, exposed.

AQ-014How does the Charleston work?#

Three passes of three tiles: right, then across, then left. Everyone passes at the same moment and picks up only after all four players have pushed.

4 notes · 3 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Nine tiles move in the required Charleston and your count stays at thirteen.
  • An optional second Charleston runs the other way: left, across, right.
  • If any one player declines the second, it is skipped for the whole table.
  • East discards once the Charleston is finished.

AQ-015Can I pass a joker in the Charleston?#

Never. A joker in any Charleston or courtesy pass kills your hand on the spot.

3 notes · 3 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Check your three tiles before you push them — two seconds of insurance against the most expensive beginner mistake.
  • If a joker arrives in a pass you received, you did not cause it: show it and return it, which is how most tables handle it.
  • The ban covers both Charlestons, the courtesy pass and blind passes.

Also asked as: can you pass a joker in the charleston · joker in charleston dead hand · what if i pass a joker · joker courtesy pass

AQ-016What is a blind pass?#

On the last pass of a Charleston you may forward one to three tiles you have just received, face down and unseen, when your own rack has nothing left to spare.

3 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • It is legal only on the final pass: the left pass that ends the first Charleston, the right pass that ends the second.
  • You may forward only enough to meet your three-tile obligation.
  • You may never blind-pass a joker.

AQ-017What is the courtesy pass, and can we skip it?#

After the Charleston, opposite players may swap up to three more tiles, the same number each way — and either player can decline.

3 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Declining is normal and never rude; you do not owe an explanation.
  • The courtesy pass is optional everywhere, and the second Charleston is a table decision too.
  • At a club or tournament, the first Charleston itself is mandatory.

AQ-018What can a joker stand for?#

Any tile inside a group of three or more — a pung, kong, quint or sextet — including a suited tile, a wind, a dragon or a flower.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • It cannot sit alone as a single, and it cannot be half of a pair.
  • It cannot fill a required single either, such as one wind in NEWS or a digit in a year hand.
  • Jokers are never printed on the card; group size tells you whether one is allowed.
  • A joker substitutes by tile identity, not by suit.

Also asked as: what can a joker be used for · are jokers wild in mahjong · can a joker be a flower · joker rules american mahjong

AQ-019Can a pair be one real tile plus one joker?#

No. A pair must be two identical natural tiles; a joker only works inside a group of three or more.

3 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Two naturals plus a joker is a legal pung — the restriction is about the size of the group, not about mixing.
  • The same ban covers singles: NEWS needs four real winds, and a year hand needs real digits.
  • Keep jokers at the far right of your rack, physically apart from your pairs, so you cannot miscount one.

AQ-020How does a joker exchange work?#

On your turn, after you have picked, you may swap a natural tile from your rack for a joker in any player's exposed group — and they cannot refuse.

4 notes · 3 pages · 4 phrasings
  • The order is pick, rack, exchange, discard. Swapping before your turn begins kills your hand.
  • You may take more than one joker in a turn, and you may exchange into your own exposure.
  • A kong is no exception: a joker in an exposed kong can be redeemed too, and the group stays four tiles.
  • Jokers in a wrongly exposed group are not redeemable.

AQ-021What is a kong, and how many kinds are there?#

A kong is four identical tiles, counted inside your fourteen — and in American mahjong it comes with no replacement draw.

4 notes · 2 pages · 6 phrasings
  • Two forms, not three: concealed (all four drawn by you, kept in the rack) and exposed (you held three, jokers allowed, and called the fourth).
  • There is no "added" kong. Once you expose a pung and discard, that group is fixed — a fourth tile drawn later cannot join it.
  • No replacement tile and no dead wall. Expose the kong, discard one, play on: the called tile was your tile for that turn.
  • A kong made entirely of jokers is legal, but only while it stays concealed — the tile you call for an exposure must be a natural tile.

AQ-022What does "C" mean on the card?#

C means concealed: you may not call any discard except the one that completes your hand.

4 notes · 3 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Every other tile comes off the wall; calling a pung or kong from a discard makes the hand dead immediately.
  • A concealed kong built from your own tiles is fine, and a joker exchange on your turn does not break concealment.
  • The winning tile is the exception — you may claim a discard to declare Mah Jongg on a C hand.
  • C lines print higher because they are harder to complete.

AQ-023What makes a hand dead?#

A hand is dead when it can no longer match any line on the card — usually through one of eight common mistakes.

4 notes · 3 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Wrong tile count: thirteen in play, fourteen only at the instant of your draw or your declaration.
  • A Mah Jongg call that does not match a line, or exposures that fit no line at all.
  • A joker in a pair or a single, or exposing any part of a hand marked C.
  • A joker exchanged before you pick, or a claimed tile named wrongly.

Also asked as: why is my hand dead · dead hand mahjong rules · what kills a mahjong hand · common dead hand mistakes

AQ-024Can I call my own hand dead? What happens next?#

No — you cannot call your own hand dead. Another player has to see it and call it, and until someone does, you keep picking and discarding.

4 notes · 3 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Once the call is made and stands, you stop picking and discarding for the rest of the hand, and you pay the winner the full value of their hand.
  • Before that call you are still in the hand: say nothing, discard only tiles that have been seen, and steer toward a wall game.
  • Exposures you made stay on the table — jokers in them can still be exchanged, but not a joker in the exposure that killed the hand.
  • Call someone dead and be wrong, and the hand plays on: at the end, whoever was wrong pays the other 50 cents or 50 points.

AQ-025How does scoring work?#

You read the value printed beside your line on the card. There is no han, fu or fan to count.

4 notes · 3 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Won off a discard: the thrower pays double, the other two pay single.
  • Self-drawn: all three opponents pay double.
  • A 25-point line therefore collects 100 on a discard and 150 on a self-draw.
  • Zero jokers in the winning hand doubles the printed value, Singles & Pairs excepted — the card prints it, though a few tables treat it as optional.

Read: Scoring & Payment·Printable Cheat Sheet·FAQ: the long version

Also asked as: how does scoring work in american mahjong · mahjong points explained · who pays who in mahjong · mahjong scoring for beginners

AQ-026Why is a self-drawn Mah Jongg worth more?#

Because on a self-draw all three opponents pay double, while on a discard only the thrower pays double and the other two pay single.

3 notes · 1 page · 4 phrasings
  • A hand collects four times its printed value on a discard but six times on a self-draw — 50% more.
  • That gap is why a strong player sometimes lets a claim pass and waits for the draw.
  • It also means the player who feeds the hand carries the largest single share of the payment.

AQ-027Can three people play American mahjong?#

Not under standard NMJL rules — the game is built for four seats, and the Charleston depends on having a player directly opposite you.

3 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • The wall is four equal stacks, and every hand assumes four racks and four payments.
  • A common workaround is "ghost": deal a fourth hand and auto-play its turns so the Charleston and the wall still work. It is a house variant, not NMJL.
  • If you are short a player, find a fourth rather than improvising.

AQ-028Can two people play American mahjong?#

Not in the standard game. The two-player adaptation players use is "Siamese", where each person also runs a second dummy hand so the full 152 tiles and the Charleston stay in play.

3 notes · 1 page · 8 phrasings
  • House rules decide how the second hand is played and who pays whom.
  • It is a workaround, not an NMJL form, and it does not prepare you for a club table.
  • Standard play needs four seated players.

AQ-029What if five people want to play?#

The standard game seats four and there is no standard five-player form, so with five at the table someone sits out or rotates in between hands.

3 notes · 9 phrasings
  • The Charleston, the four wall sections and the payment rules all assume four players.
  • Three- and two-player workarounds exist — ghost and Siamese — but there is no equivalent for five.
  • Rotate seats between hands so nobody spends the whole evening watching.

AQ-030How long does a hand or an evening take?#

Roughly five to fifteen minutes per hand at a social table, and two to three hours for a session.

3 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • The Charleston adds a couple of minutes before the first discard.
  • New-player tables run slower, and that is expected.
  • A wall game costs a reshuffle and a redeal rather than a payout.

The Card & Hand Reading

The NMJL card, its notation, why a hand that looks right is dead, and how to read a line fast.

AQ-031What is the NMJL card?#

It's the annual list of hands you may win with — rulebook, hand menu and score sheet folded into one card.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • The National Mah Jongg League publishes it every spring; the 152-tile set never changes, only the legal hands.
  • A win is 14 tiles matching one printed line, including its suit rules and its X or C marker.
  • Nothing off the card counts — not four pungs and a pair, not a shape that merely looks like mahjong.

Also asked as: what is the nmjl card · what is the mahjong card · what is the american mahjong card · is the card the rulebook · why do i need a card to play mahjong

AQ-032Why does the card change every year?#

The League rewrites the hands each spring so no single pattern dominates and every player relearns the game together.

3 notes · 3 pages · 5 phrasings
  • The season runs April 1 to March 31; new cards mail in late March to early April.
  • Categories persist; individual lines are added, dropped and repriced, and headings can shift.
  • Read a new card before you play it: confirm the sections, check whether last year's favorites still exist, and find this year's cheap X lines.

AQ-033What happens if I use last year's card?#

At a club or tournament none of it is legal — those lines are off the current card, so the hand is dead even when every tile matches.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Home games may keep an older card if all four agree before the first deal and use the same year.
  • Mixing card years at one table makes the game unplayable — not a house rule.
  • The real risk is muscle memory: you keep steering toward shapes that no longer exist.

AQ-034Where do I buy the card, and how much is it?#

Order it from the National Mah Jongg League — about $14 for the standard card, $15 for large print.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • The League is the publisher, so buying direct is reliable; "free card PDF" sites are not the publisher.
  • Cards mail in late March to early April, so order in March for the first week of the season.
  • Proceeds support charities the League designates, including the Alzheimer's Association and American Heart Association.

AQ-035Paper, large print, or an app — and does everyone need one?#

Buy a printed card per player; large print is the same card in a bigger format, and no official app replaces it.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Standard folds to about 5⅛ × 4 inches, large print about 6⅛ × 4¾ — easier at arm's length under a lamp.
  • The League's online game is a subscription that still requires you to own the physical card.
  • Sharing one card around four racks slows every turn and causes disputes.

AQ-036How do I read the notation — the numbers and repeated digits?#

Read left to right in groups: a number is a rank with no suit attached, and repeating it says how many identical tiles that group wants.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • 222 is a pung, 4444 a kong, 55555 a quint; a lone 8 is a single tile, not a group.
  • Spaces separate groups; digits written together are one identical group.
  • The suit comes from the line's colors, never the number — the card never prints "three of dots."

AQ-037What do the letters mean — F, NEWS, D, R, G, 0?#

Letters name tiles with no number: F is a flower, N/E/W/S the winds, D any dragon, and R, G, 0 pin red, green and Soap.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • NEWS means one of each wind — all four, never three, never a joker.
  • Flowers are ordinary tiles, all eight interchangeable, never wild.
  • Dragons lock to suits (Red = craks, Green = bams, White = dots) unless white is a zero, when it is suitless.

Also asked as: what does f mean on the mahjong card · what is NEWS on the card · what does d mean mahjong card · what does 0 mean on the card · soap dragon notation

AQ-038What does X mean on a line?#

X means the hand may be exposed: you can call a discard to complete a pung, kong or quint and leave it face up on your rack.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Exposed is permission, not obligation — you can build an X line quietly and still win.
  • Once you expose, the hand is locked to that line and the table can read your direction.
  • The friendliest lines on any card are the pung-based X lines with no joker requirement.

Also asked as: what does x mean on the mahjong card · exposed vs concealed mahjong · can i call a discard · open hand meaning nmjl · x marker

AQ-039What does C mean, and what does concealed actually forbid?#

C forbids calling any discard — every tile but the last must come off the wall, and one exposed group kills the hand.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • You may claim the 14th tile if it completes Mah Jongg; that is the single allowed exception.
  • You can still kong from tiles you already hold, and still exchange a joker after you draw.
  • C lines print higher because 13 of your 14 tiles must be your own draws.

AQ-040What is a "line," and why must my hand match exactly one?#

A line is one complete 14-tile winning shape printed as a row, and your hand has to be that row and nothing else.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Group sizes, suit relationships, flower counts and the X or C marker all belong to the line.
  • Close is dead. Thirteen correct tiles and one wrong group scores nothing.
  • Name the category and line out loud before you expose — if you cannot name it, you have not verified it.

AQ-041What are the sections, and how do I choose which one to play toward?#

The card groups lines into named families — year hands, 2468, 13579, Consecutive Run, Like Numbers, 369, Quints, Winds & Dragons, Singles & Pairs — and you pick by what your deal resembles.

  • The categories persist, but headings and line-ups shift, so re-check them on the card in your hand.
  • Start with Like Numbers or Consecutive Run; year hands are unforgiving.
  • Singles & Pairs bans jokers and pays the most, so save it for later.

AQ-042Do the colors on the card tell me which suit to use?#

No — color tells you how many suits are involved and which groups share one; you decide which suit maps to which color.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Two colors mean exactly two suits, never "this one must be bams."
  • Same color, same suit. Different colors, different suits. That is the whole rule.
  • Dragons are the exception: they belong to a suit by identity, not by print color.

AQ-043What does the word "any" in the brackets mean?#

"Any" hands you the choice inside that block — any two suits, any three suits, any like number — and each named block is decided on its own.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • "(Any 2 Suits)" means two suits, assigned by you; it never names them.
  • In a like-numbers line, "any" refers to the number: pick 3s or 7s, and every numbered group uses it.
  • It does not loosen identity: a 5 in dots and a 5 in bams never make one pung.

AQ-044Which slots accept a joker, and which never do?#

Jokers fill groups of three or more — pung, kong, quint, sextet — and never a pair or a required single.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • The card never prints "joker"; the group size is what tells you one is allowed.
  • A group in your own rack may be all jokers; an exposure cannot, because the tile you call has to be a natural tile.
  • Scatter jokers through your rack and you will eventually treat one as half a pair; keep them at the far right.

Also asked as: can a joker be a pair · joker in a single · where can jokers go · joker rules on the card · how many jokers in a quint

AQ-045How do I know a line needs a joker before I commit?#

Count group sizes: a quint needs at least one joker and a sextet at least two, because only four copies of any tile exist.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Quint and sextet lines are hostage to whether you actually hold the jokers.
  • Dealt four of a kind when the line wants five? Hold all four; one joker is easier to find than a fifth natural.
  • Singles & Pairs forbids jokers entirely, which is why it pays what it does.

AQ-046Why do hands that look right turn out to be dead?#

Most surprise dead hands come from eight near-misses: wrong group size, borrowed groups, misread suits, a joker in a forbidden slot, a missed C, flowers as wilds, a missing single, an unread note.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • A pung where the line asks a kong is the commonest.
  • Each trap is almost right — only the table check catches it.
  • The cure is procedural: count, name the line, check each joker, check X or C.

AQ-047Can I mix groups from two different lines if the result looks complete?#

No — all fourteen tiles come from one row; borrowing a group from another line is the most common fatal error among experienced players.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • No credit for being "mostly" one line, or for the best parts of two.
  • Cross-line hands usually break a suit rule too, so the error compounds.
  • If you cannot point to the row you are building, it is not a legal hand.

AQ-048The card says 222 — so that means three 2-dots, right?#

Not necessarily: a bare number names a rank, and the suit comes from the line's colors plus any "any suits" note printed beside it.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • The real exception is dragons, which are tied to a suit by identity rather than by print color.
  • Color is a count, not a key: two colors means two suits, your choice which.
  • This single misread produces beautiful racks and dead hands at the reveal.

AQ-049How do I stop miscounting the groups in my hand?#

Check the line group by group instead of by eye: three tiles where it says three, four where it says four, fourteen at the end.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • A wrong tile count is the most common reason a called Mah Jongg is disallowed.
  • Pungs and kongs change your rack count, so recount after every exposure.
  • Say each group aloud as you check it; skipping the one that looks obvious is how hands die.

AQ-050How do I find the hand that fits the tiles I was dealt?#

Work at section level first: read your deal for number and suit, and see which two or three sections could absorb it.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • The hand finder takes up to 18 tiles (14 plus flowers and jokers) and suggests sections, with joker and concealed rules.
  • It is a section hint, not a solver; the exact line comes off your card.
  • Narrow to two or three candidates; let draws eliminate them.

AQ-051How long does it take to read the card fluently?#

A season of regular play, not an afternoon — most players get through a hand unaided in a few sessions, but fast reading settles in over months.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Budget fifteen minutes with a new card: sections, last year's lines, this year's cheap X lines.
  • Drill by reading a line aloud in groups, then covering the card and rebuilding it.
  • The hand builder gives reps: pick a line, draw, discard, and get told when the shape breaks.

AQ-052Can the card be memorized, and what do strong players actually memorize?#

Nobody memorizes the whole card — strong players memorize the map: sections, notation, and a few default lines they can build cold.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • What sticks is family recognition: see the deal, know it is a 2468 or consecutive shape without flipping pages.
  • Then a handful of cheap exposed lines, plus where the quints and concealed lines sit.
  • The lines expire every spring; the structure does not, so learn the structure.

AQ-053What is the number printed at the right of each line?#

It's that hand's point value, printed on the card — 25 and up, topping out at 75 on the 2026 card — and it is the entire scoring system.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • You do not compute anything: find the line, read the number.
  • Higher values track difficulty, not luck — concealed, joker-dependent and singles-heavy lines pay more.
  • Multipliers for self-draw, discarder-pays-double and jokerless sit on top; the line's printed value never changes.

AQ-054Why does a line print the same group twice?#

Repetition is literal: the same group printed twice means two separate groups you must build, not one group described twice.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Lines built on the year digits commonly ask for that digit block more than once.
  • The same numbers in two different colors are two suits, not one doubled group.
  • Count physical groups against the line before you commit tiles, not symbols on the page.

AQ-055How do I pick a hand fast after the deal?#

Name two or three lines your tiles could plausibly become, then let the next few draws eliminate them.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Locking one hand before your first discard is the classic beginner error: the Charleston hands you tiles that invalidate it.
  • Experts pick a direction in about three seconds because they know the card's structure, not seventy rows.
  • Score candidates on joker requirement, group rarity, and X versus C; the line easy on all three is your default.

AQ-056When should I actually commit to one hand?#

Later than feels comfortable — strong players often don't commit until rounds 8 to 10.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Treat your hand choice as a live distribution: 40/35/25 at round 3, 60/30 at round 6, 85/15 by round 9.
  • A beginner locks a direction by round 3 and then sits on dead tiles for the rest of the hand.
  • Sunk cost isn't cost. Dropping a direction you already put four tiles into is correct when the math moves.

AQ-057How many tiles "off" is too far to keep going?#

Three or more tiles away with the wall in its final third is too far; four or more with under 20 tiles left is hopeless.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • A workable fold test: more than two or three tiles away once the wall is in its last third.
  • Four-plus effective tiles out with fewer than 20 tiles left is a dead hand walking.
  • Distance matters less than kind: a missing pair you cannot call is worse than a pung you can draw.

AQ-058When should I give up on a hand and fold?#

When two or three of the fold signals are true at once — not when one of them is.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • You are more than two or three tiles away and the wall is in its final third.
  • The tiles you need for a pair have already been discarded, because pairs cannot be called or joker-filled.
  • An opponent has two or more exposures while you have shown none, or you keep drawing blanks while others progress.

AQ-059What does folding actually look like at the table?#

You stop building and throw only tiles the table has already proved nobody needs.

3 notes · 1 page · 5 phrasings
  • Safe: a tile already discarded two or three times, a suit no opponent is collecting, and any discarded joker, which can never be called.
  • Dangerous: a tile nobody has thrown, the neighbor of a just-called group, and a flower late in the hand.
  • No new calls. A pung from a folding hand spends a turn and advertises a line you are not going to finish.

AQ-060How do I balance offense and defense?#

Attack while you are the fastest hand at the table, and defend the moment somebody else clearly is.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Fastest means few of your needed tiles are gone, one line is clear, and nobody is exposed and close.
  • Pushing is also cheap when your discard is safe anyway — if the throw can't deal in, attacking costs little.
  • Re-run it every turn: draw, discard, observe, infer who is ahead, then choose. Most players skip the infer step.

Also asked as: offense vs defense mahjong · when to attack when to defend · should I keep pushing my hand · aggressive or safe mahjong strategy · balance attack defense

AQ-061When do I stop pushing and just play safe?#

When two opponents are visibly one tile away — or when you are one tile away yourself and the discard is no longer free.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • At one tile out, stop optimizing. Don't switch lines; throw your safest tile, not your most useless one.
  • A broken hand costs you a redeal. Dealing the winning tile costs you double. That asymmetry is the defensive game.
  • A self-draw is paid double by all three; a discard only by the discarder, so holding one turn can be worth it.

AQ-062What does an opponent's pung tell me?#

It names a suit and points at a card family; two exposures usually name the exact hand.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • A pung of 4-dots plus a kong of 8-dots means dots, and every dot you throw is live danger.
  • It also tells you what they are *not* doing, which is often more useful than what they are.
  • One exposure gives direction, two confirm the target — and an early exposure usually means a fast player, ahead of you.

AQ-063What does an exposure hide?#

Everything it doesn't show — the two groups still in the rack, whether a joker is coming, and whether the exposure is even real.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • An exposed hand cannot pivot, so you can read the rest of it off the card.
  • A joker in an exposure is a loan, not a possession. Anyone with the natural tile can trade for it.
  • Strong players expose false directions on purpose, so treat one exposure as a hypothesis, not a fact.

AQ-064How do I track danger tiles without losing my mind?#

Track the discard pool, not your memory of it — a tile thrown two or three times is dead and safe to throw again.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • The dangerous tiles are the ones nobody has thrown yet, especially in a suit that has gone quiet.
  • Add the pattern dangers: neighbors of a just-called group, flowers late, anything matching an exposed suit.
  • Stage the risk by the wall: early is over 60 tiles left, mid is 30 to 60, late is under 30.

AQ-065What do discard patterns tell me about suits?#

A suit that keeps showing up in discards is a suit nobody is collecting — and a suit that goes quiet late is being hoarded.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • What opponents pass in the Charleston previews what they will throw: craks pushed across the table make craks safer for you.
  • One pass is noise. Three passes across a Charleston start to show a pattern.
  • Late in the hand, a live tile in a silent suit is the most dangerous discard on the table.

AQ-066What does a desperate pivot look like in the discards?#

A player suddenly throwing tiles from the suit they had been collecting — often with a joker going into the middle.

3 notes · 1 page · 5 phrasings
  • A discarded joker usually means one of three things: one tile from Mah Jongg and hunting a pair, a Jokerless hand, or pure defense.
  • All three make the table more dangerous. Tighten your next few discards and stop feeding that lane.
  • Off-suit tiles from someone with two exposures are usually a dying line, not a safe one.

AQ-067How should I budget the eight jokers?#

Run one subtraction every turn: eight, minus yours, minus exposed, minus dead in the discards, equals what is still hidden.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • If your line needs more jokers than that number, the line is finished. Pivot now, not four turns from now.
  • One or two is the working range. Three or four means commit to a line that genuinely needs them. Five-plus is usually a trap.
  • A concealed joker cannot be taken from you; an exposed one can. That is the whole timing problem.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • One joker finishing a pung you will never draw beats two sitting in reserve.
  • Joker value spikes after mid-hand: it may be your only fast route to the last tile, or your only way to change lines.
  • Don't park a joker in an unfinished exposure — a half-built group stays visible, and stealable, longer.

AQ-069How do I play a Jokerless hand?#

Only chase it when your groups arrived naturally and your line contains no quint or sextet.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • A hand with no joker anywhere pays double, and doubles stack — Jokerless on a self-draw is four times base.
  • Quints need at least one joker and sextets at least two, because only four copies of any tile exist. Flowers are the exception.
  • Decide before mid-hand. Passing on an exchange commits you; after that, every joker in your rack is dead weight.

AQ-070Can you have too many jokers?#

Yes. Five or more is usually a trap, not a strength.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Win rate climbs to about 55.7% at five jokers, then falls to 52.0% at six and 46.6% at seven in aggregate play data.
  • Jokers can't fill a pair and can't be passed in the Charleston, so surplus jokers are frozen rack slots.

AQ-071Which tiles should I pass in the Charleston?#

Your least coherent suit — three tiles that don't cluster around any number the card cares about.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Keep pairs and near-pungs. They are the skeleton of almost every line, and a pair is the one thing a joker cannot finish.
  • Pass the lone 2-crak when nothing else in your rack is a crak.
  • Never pass a joker. It is illegal, and passing one kills the hand outright.

AQ-072What does my pass tell my opponents?#

Every pass sends two signals at once: "I don't need this," and by omission, "what I kept matters more."

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • A tile you needed landing in your pass tray tells you that player doesn't want that suit or number.
  • Wind-dumping is a loud tell: a player passing winds is unlikely to be on a Winds and Dragons hand.
  • One pass is noise; three passes across a Charleston start to show a pattern. And players bluff, so treat early passes as hints.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Want 2468 bams and holding a spare 1-crak? Pass a 3-bam and let them read "consecutive" instead.
  • Once your shape is set, the last fixed pass can carry a decoy to the player across from you.

AQ-074Can I change to a different hand mid-game?#

Yes, until something is exposed — after that the exposure is the contract, and switching is a dead hand, not a pivot.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Tiles in your rack are not a commitment. A pung on the table is.
  • Even a concealed line can fall back to an exposed line, but only if you have not exposed or called anything yet.

Three numbers, not 152 tiles: jokers still hidden, your own needed tiles still live, and how many groups each opponent has exposed.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Count your needed tiles in the discards before you commit. If they are all visible, the hand is over regardless of how it feels.
  • Count jokers by subtraction, never by memory: eight minus yours, minus exposed, minus discarded.

AQ-077What win rate should a beginner expect?#

About 22.3% is the fair baseline among four equal players; above roughly 25% you are beating the table.

3 notes · 1 page · 5 phrasings
  • Platform data has 89.3% of games ending in a win and 10.7% in a wall game, so an equal share of the wins is 22.3%.
  • Below 20% over a long run points to a systematic flaw, not bad luck.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Individual hands start following within a few weeks of regular play; the categories come before the rows.

AQ-080How do I stop tilting and chasing?#

Treat tilt as a structural problem, not a willpower problem — the fix is limits you actually honor.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Tilt, playing on after a bad beat, costs more points than any technical flaw.
  • Stop when you're tired and take breaks; judgment decays over a long session, and the last hour is where hands get donated.
  • Replay your worst decision of the night, then fix one recurring mistake that week. "Play better" fixes nothing.

AQ-081How should I handle a dead hand?#

Two states, two answers. While nobody has called it, play silently and defensively; once it is called, stop picking and discarding and wait the hand out.

4 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Don't announce it yourself. Saying it out loud hands the other three extra picks, which is exactly what they want.
  • While you are still playing, throw only tiles that have already been seen and never pung or kong — a call only hands out information.
  • Once it is called, your discards stop deciding anything; you keep your seat and pay the winner the full value of their hand.
  • Payment is the same either way, so the defensive stretch is not wasted — it is the only part you can still influence.

AQ-082Is "always keep jokers" good advice?#

No. Hoarding is the most common way a healthy joker count turns into a losing hand.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • A joker only pays when it replaces a tile you cannot otherwise get; three left in your rack at the end of a lost hand were wasted draws.
  • Win rate peaks around five jokers and falls at six and seven, so "more is better" is measurably wrong.
  • Keep the ones you have — never discard one — but spend them on your scarcest group instead of collecting them.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Pairs matter because they cannot be called or joker-filled, so they are the hardest thing to rebuild. Early on, protect them.
  • In full defense, breaking your own pair beats throwing a live tile into an exposed hand.
  • The pair you cannot replace is the one whose tiles are all still unseen. The pair whose copies are already out is already dead.

AQ-084Should I call every tile I can pung?#

No. Every call locks your hand to one line and tells the table exactly where you are.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Call only if that tile serves the line you already chose and the group actually appears in it.
  • Conceal until you are one or two tiles away; a hidden rack keeps opponents guessing and stops them blocking you.
  • A tile you didn't need buys speed you can't spend and information you can't take back.

Buying, Playing Out There & Culture

What to buy, where to play, tournaments, rule families, and how the American game came to be.

AQ-085What actually comes in a real American mahjong set?#

A complete American set is 152 tiles, four racks with pushers, dice and a case — and no card.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • The 152 is 108 suited tiles, 16 winds, 12 dragons, 8 flowers and 8 jokers.
  • Each player gets a rack, about 19 inches, with a sliding pusher at one end; four players need four.
  • The annual NMJL card is the one piece that never ships in the box.
  • A set short of eight jokers is not a complete American set, whatever the listing says.

Also asked as: what's in a mahjong set · american mahjong set contents · how many racks come with a mahjong set · does a mahjong set include the card

AQ-086The box says 166 pieces. Is that the right American set?#

Probably yes — 166 usually means 152 playing tiles plus spare blanks, so 152 is the number that has to be right.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Retailers count the spares; what matters is 152 playing tiles with 8 jokers and 8 flowers.
  • Look for "American" and either "152 tiles" or "166 pieces" in the listing.
  • 144 is a Chinese set: no jokers, no Arabic numerals, and it cannot run an NMJL card.
  • If no count appears at all, assume it is the wrong game.

AQ-087What should I check before I pay for a mahjong set?#

Check four things in order: tile count, face engraving, four working racks, and a case that closes.

4 notes · 1 page · 4 phrasings
  • Count 8 jokers and 8 flowers; a set missing either is incomplete.
  • Faces should be engraved, not surface-printed, or the suits wear smooth and read badly across a table.
  • Confirm four racks with pushers, and tiles around 30 mm / 1.2 in or larger.
  • Assume the card is not included, and refuse anything sold as "genuine ivory" — new ivory trade has been banned since 1975.

AQ-088Why do cheap mahjong sets frustrate beginners?#

Because the savings show up as unreadable tiles and racks that fight you, usually within the first month.

4 notes · 1 page · 4 phrasings
  • Thin tiles with printed faces lose contrast and are hard to read across the table.
  • Cheap pushers stick, so the wall collapses and every deal slows down.
  • Some inexpensive sets are 144-tile Chinese sets with joker stickers added, which breaks the card's count.
  • The usual outcome is buying twice, and the second set costs more.

AQ-089How much should I expect to pay for a mahjong set?#

Expect roughly $100–$300 for a complete, serviceable beginner set, with most complete sets landing nearer $150–$200.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Premium and design-house sets run roughly $300–$500, buying tile weight, bigger faces and a hard case rather than a better game.
  • Below about $100 you usually get tiles without racks, thin printed tiles, or a 144-tile set.
  • Add the card: roughly $14 standard, $15 large print.
  • Prices move with material and brand, so treat any figure as a band, not a quote.

Also asked as: mahjong set cost · how much is a mahjong set · american mahjong set price range · cheap mahjong set price

AQ-090Is a $40 set enough to start?#

Usually not — at that price you are buying a compromise, even when the listing looks complete.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • The common version is a 144-tile Chinese set with joker stickers, or thin tiles on flimsy racks with no real pushers.
  • Some cheap sets are genuinely complete, so check count, racks and engraving before price.
  • For your first month, borrow from the group you plan to join; most keep spares.
  • If you must buy cheap, buy used from a player who is upgrading.

Also asked as: is a cheap mahjong set worth it · $40 mahjong set · starter mahjong set under 50 · budget american mahjong set

AQ-091What makes a $400 set different from a $150 one?#

Tile material, face depth, rack quality and the case — not the rules, which are identical in both boxes.

4 notes · 1 page · 4 phrasings
  • Melamine and denser composites feel heavier, shuffle deeper and hold engraved detail longer than thin acrylic.
  • Upgraded racks are wood or acrylic with smooth pushers; cheap ones flex and jam mid-deal.
  • A hard case protects the set in transit; a soft bag is fine if it stays home.
  • At the top end you also pay for colour and design — a reason to spend, not a playing advantage.

AQ-092How do I tell an American set from a Chinese one in a listing?#

The listing has to say 152 tiles (or 166 pieces), American, with 8 jokers and four racks — anything else is a different game.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Good listings also give tile dimensions and material, and show photographs of the actual tiles rather than a stock render.
  • Red flags: "144 tiles", "Chinese mahjong", "Hong Kong style", no rack count, or "mini/travel" with no measurements.
  • American tiles carry Arabic numerals beside the suits, so the faces read without Chinese characters.
  • If the seller cannot tell you the joker count in a message, buy elsewhere.

Also asked as: how to tell american from chinese mahjong set · mahjong set buying guide · is this mahjong set american · 144 vs 152 mahjong tiles

AQ-093Does the set come with the NMJL card?#

No — the card is published separately every spring and is never part of the tile box.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • The NMJL releases a new card each April, and only that year's card defines the legal hands and values.
  • It costs roughly $14 standard or $15 large print, and it is the most important purchase after the tiles.
  • Every player should own a copy; passing one around slows the game and starts arguments.
  • An old card is fine at home by agreement, not at a club or tournament.

AQ-094Do I need four racks, or can we share?#

You need four — one per player, because each person racks 13 tiles in front of them for the whole hand.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • A rack is about 19 inches and holds tiles upright so you can read your hand without lifting it.
  • Most sets ship with four; count them before buying second-hand.
  • Guests are often lent a rack, so ask before buying your own.
  • Two players sharing a rack means neither can arrange a full hand.

Also asked as: how many racks in a mahjong set · can two players share a rack · do i need my own rack · mahjong rack size

AQ-095Do I need a mat or table cover?#

No — a mat is optional comfort, not equipment, and nothing in the standard game requires one.

4 notes · 1 page · 4 phrasings
  • You need a flat, stable surface with room for four racks, the wall and four discard areas.
  • A cloth or felt cover quiets the tiles and stops them sliding; some players use one, many do not.
  • The standard kit is tiles, four racks with pushers, dice, a case and the card.
  • On glass or a very hard table, a cover is worth it for noise and protection.

AQ-096What are pushers, and do I need them?#

A pusher is the sliding arm at one end of your rack, and you want it, because it moves tiles without your hands on them.

4 notes · 1 page · 4 phrasings
  • Instead of shoving the wall across the table, you push it forward in one motion, keeping it square.
  • It also speeds the start of every hand and prevents collisions that knock tiles loose.
  • Most complete American sets include four; if not, pushers can be bought as a set.
  • "All-in-one" rack-and-pusher designs work the same way and are common on newer sets.

Also asked as: what is a mahjong pusher · do i need pushers · mahjong rack with pusher · betting stick pusher

AQ-097Can I use my grandmother's old mahjong set?#

Often yes, but count the jokers first — sets made before the 1960s may not have eight.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Jokers entered American sets in 1961, and the eight-joker, eight-flower count settled around 1971–72.
  • Check for 152 tiles, four racks, and faces still legible; bone-and-bamboo sets play fine but the tiles are small.
  • You will certainly need the current card, and possibly racks and a case.
  • Never buy or sell a set described as "genuine ivory"; the trade has been banned since 1975.

AQ-098Where do people actually play American mahjong in person?#

Clubs, Jewish community centers, library branches, parks-and-rec departments, senior centers, churches and home games.

4 notes · 1 page · 4 phrasings
  • Organized clubs are often affiliated with the NMJL, which publishes the card the game runs on.
  • JCCs and community halls are the most relaxed places to learn; nobody minds a beginner question.
  • Home games are the backbone: a host supplies tiles, everyone brings the current card.
  • Many clubs run a beginner night before opening the tables, which is the best entry point.

AQ-099How do I find a mahjong group near me?#

Ask three places first: your public library, your parks-and-rec department, and the nearest JCC or community center.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • A web search for "American mahjong" plus your town helps, but asking at a community center desk is often faster, because many games are never posted online.
  • Board-game cafés and game shops usually know who plays in town.
  • Look for a group on the current NMJL card, so what you learn here transfers.
  • Ask which ruleset they play before you commit.

AQ-100How do I join an established table as a beginner?#

Ask first, arrive early, say you are new, and let the table teach you between hands rather than during them.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Email ahead and ask which card they play and whether they run a beginner night.
  • Bring the current card and your own rack if you have one; turning up without a card slows everyone.
  • Announce your discards clearly, and ask questions between hands.

AQ-101What should I bring to my first mahjong game?#

The current-year card, a rack if you own one, and a cheat sheet — the host supplies the rest.

4 notes · 2 pages · 9 phrasings
  • The card is non-negotiable; every player brings their own, and the table's legal hands depend on that year's edition.
  • Bring your own rack if you have one, but most hosts keep spares for guests.
  • A one-page cheat sheet for the Charleston and joker rules is genuinely useful in the first few sessions.
  • Leave your house rules at home — ask what this table does before the first deal.

AQ-102Can you play American mahjong online?#

Yes — there are video-table groups and dedicated apps, and they are a real game, just a thinner one.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Players gather on a video call with a shared board, or hold tiles to the camera.
  • Several apps host tables you can join solo or with friends; use what your group uses.
  • The Hand Builder, Hand Finder and Solitaire drills here train the card rather than hosting four-player games.

AQ-103What can't online mahjong teach me?#

The physical game — shuffling, building the wall, racking, pushing, and reading a real human across a table.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Screen play hides tile-count mistakes that a live table catches instantly, so bad habits survive longer.
  • You cannot learn the rhythm of the Charleston: how long to hold a pass, what a pause signals.
  • Calling "Mah Jongg" out loud, exposing cleanly and surviving a dead-hand challenge are table skills.
  • The clack and weight of the tiles are how experienced players track the game.

AQ-104How does a mahjong tournament actually run?#

Same card, much stricter procedure: timed rounds, verbal calls, cross-checked score sheets, and a director who settles everything.

4 notes · 1 page · 4 phrasings
  • Events follow the Standardized National Mah Jongg Tournament Rules, codified in 2005; master points date from 2011.
  • Every player shows the current card; the first Charleston is compulsory, the second optional, jokers never passed.
  • Called tiles go on the flat top of the rack, and picking ahead is penalised.
  • Scores are verified player to player, and tables rotate while East stays put.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Learn to call discards out loud and place claimed tiles on the flat top of the rack.
  • Know the current card well enough to name your line, and read the event's rules sheet; bonuses and penalties vary by director.

AQ-106What's the difference between NMJL, AMJA and Wright-Patterson?#

Three rulebooks share the name: NMJL is the 152-tile standard, Wright-Patterson a 144-tile jokerless branch, AMJA an alternative card in the same family.

4 notes · 2 pages · 9 phrasings
  • NMJL: 8 jokers, wild only in groups of three or more, no chows, annual card.
  • Wright-Patterson: no jokers, chows allowed, wins only on named "Green Book" hands.
  • AMJA: 152 tiles, its own card, higher values, jokers allowed in singles or pairs when a line calls for them.
  • Learn NMJL first; it is what clubs and tournaments mean by "American mahjong".

AQ-107What happens if players bring different cards to the same table?#

The table stalls, because a hand legal on one card may not exist on another — so settle the card before the first deal.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • NMJL and AMJA hands are entirely different and their values differ, so mixing publishers makes every win arguable.
  • Even within NMJL, a 2025 card and a 2026 card list different hands.
  • The fix: one publisher, one year, and every player brings that same card.
  • Borrowing mid-game slows the table and invites disputes about what was agreed.

AQ-108How is American mahjong different from Hong Kong and Japanese riichi?#

They share the tiles and the sequence-building instinct; American shares the tiles and almost nothing else.

4 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • Hong Kong: 144 tiles, no jokers, chows legal, fast fan scoring, and local house rules everywhere.
  • Japanese riichi: 136 tiles with no flowers, built on yaku, riichi declarations and dora, with a premium on concealed hands.
  • American: 152 tiles, 8 jokers that never complete a pair, no chows, one annual card, mandatory Charleston.
  • Tile recognition transfers; the winning logic does not.

AQ-109How did American mahjong become its own game?#

It arrived in the 1920s, collapsed when every household played differently, and was standardized by the National Mah Jongg League in 1937.

4 notes · 1 page · 4 phrasings
  • Babcock brought it back from China with a simplified "Red Book"; department stores turned it into a fad.
  • By the early 1930s it had died, largely because no two tables agreed on rules.
  • The League's founders, Jewish-American women in New York, fixed the tile count, Charleston, scoring and legal hands.
  • Jokers arrived in 1961, and the eight-joker count settled around 1971–72.

AQ-111How do you settle a rules dispute, or call a dead hand on a friend?#

Say it once, quietly, when the problem is visible — and be sure, because if you are wrong the hand plays on and the call costs you.

5 notes · 2 pages · 4 phrasings
  • You cannot call your own hand dead; another player must raise it, based on what is seen, not guessed.
  • A wrong call does not kill the hand. Play continues, and at the end the player who was wrong pays the other 50 cents or 50 points.
  • When the call stands, that player stops drawing and discarding, keeps their seat, and pays the winner the full value of the hand.
  • Do not argue mid-hand. Finish, then review it against the card.
  • At a tournament the director rules, and their word is final.

AQ-112What's the etiquette on phones, coaching, and talking at the table?#

Phone away, coach only when asked, and keep table talk to your own tiles — confirm these before the first deal, since they are house rules.

4 notes · 1 page · 4 phrasings
  • A phone on the table stalls a four-player game and looks like checking a card app.
  • Coaching a new player between hands is usually welcome; pointing at someone's rack mid-hand is not.
  • Name your own discard as you throw it, and never comment on someone else's.

  • A paid membership adds decision drills, a card-family map, spaced review and a progress dashboard.

Search Demand & Misconceptions

The questions people are shy about asking, and the ones search engines answer badly.

AQ-114Why does searching "mahjong" bring up a tile-matching game instead of the real one?#

Because two different games share the name, and the software one has owned the search results since the 1980s.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Mahjong solitaire is a one-player puzzle built from mahjong tile faces: clear the layout by removing pairs of open tiles. It was written in 1981 and shipped to millions of PCs as *Shanghai*.
  • It has no hand, no wall, no opponents and no card, so nothing you learn from it carries over except recognizing the suits.
  • Add "American" to any search — American mahjong rules, American mahjong set, American mahjong near me — and the four-player game comes back instead.

AQ-115Is American mahjong "not real mahjong"?#

It's a real game — just a different one, and the difference was deliberate.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • American mahjong split off in the 1920s and was standardized in 1937 around three inventions no Asian variant uses: an annual card of legal hands, eight jokers, and the Charleston.
  • It isn't a watered-down Chinese game. Chinese mahjong asks what the biggest hand you can build is; American asks which card line fits your tiles. Different question, different skill.
  • When a Chinese player says "that isn't mahjong," they're naming a real divergence, not insulting your table. Both statements can be true at once.

No. Nobody at the table will ask, and the game has been played across every American community for a century.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • You need a current card, a rack, and three other people. You do not need Chinese, and you do not need to read characters — American tiles carry Arabic numerals, and the winds are marked N, E, W, S.
  • The etiquette is the etiquette of any table: show up, keep pace, ask when you're unsure.

  • The National Mah Jongg League was founded in New York in 1937 by Jewish-American women, many from Central European immigrant families.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Dots are copper coins; bams are the strings those coins were carried on; craks print the character for ten thousand above the numeral.
  • Winds are the four directions. Red is 中 ("center"), green is 發 ("prosper"), white is blank and universally called soap, written 0 on the card.
  • None of it changes how you play. In American mahjong a flower is an ordinary tile inside a hand, not a bonus you draw and replace.

AQ-121Can I really learn this in an afternoon?#

The rules, yes. The card, no.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • You can be playing legally inside an hour: draw a tile, discard a tile, call a discard to finish a group, declare when your fourteen match a line.
  • Reading the card fast is the actual curriculum, and it takes about a season of regular play. That's the part that feels like work.
  • Most people stop needing help after a handful of sessions at a real table — faster than studying alone, because someone corrects you before the mistake lands.

AQ-122How many hands make a game — when do we stop?#

There isn't a number in the rules. A session is whatever your table agrees to before the first deal.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • One hand runs about 5–15 minutes; a full session usually runs two to three hours.
  • The deal passes to the next player after every hand, so there's no natural finish line the way there is in a fixed-round game.
  • Most groups pick a clock ("we stop at four") or a number of hands. Tournaments run timed sessions instead.

AQ-123Is mahjong luck or skill?#

Both, in that order per hand. Luck decides the deal; skill decides the session.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • With 152 tiles and a fixed card, a wall game — nobody wins, nobody pays — happens more often than beginners expect.
  • Everyone works from the same menu of hands, so the edge comes from Charleston choices, when you expose, how you spend eight jokers, and what you refuse to discard late.
  • Over one hand, variance dominates. Over twenty, it stops being the explanation.

AQ-124Can I play alone?#

You can't play the four-player game alone, but you can drill the parts that actually slow beginners down.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Reading the card: the hand builder walks a line tile by tile; the solver tells you which card section your tiles could fit.
  • Tile recognition: solitaire and the memory game teach the faces faster than a rulebook does.
  • None of it teaches the Charleston or table reading. Those need three other people, which is the point of the game.

AQ-125Can I play online with friends who live far away?#

Yes. Video tables and apps both run the real game.

3 notes · 1 page · 5 phrasings
  • Groups meet on a video call with a shared digital board, or with physical tiles held up to the camera — both are common.
  • Apps host pickup tables and private rooms, and enforce the card so nobody argues about a hand.
  • The card, the Charleston and the joker restrictions are identical online, so nothing you learn there is wasted. Agree house rules in the chat first, and say your calls out loud.

AQ-126How do you shuffle the tiles? What is "washing"?#

You wash them — all 152 face down in the middle, everyone stirring with both hands for about a minute.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Nobody deals from a stack. The mess is the shuffle, and it's part of the pleasure of the game.
  • Then each player builds a wall in front of themselves: 19 stacks, two tiles high, 38 tiles each.
  • The four walls get pushed together into a closed square. Leave no gaps — a gap makes the break miscountable later.

AQ-127What are the dice actually for?#

Two jobs: they pick the dealer, and they choose where the wall gets broken.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Everyone rolls once; the highest total takes East and deals the first hand.
  • East rolls again, then counts that many stacks in from the right end of their own wall — that's the break, the equivalent of cutting a deck.
  • Dealing starts from the break. East takes 14 tiles, everyone else 13. The dice never affect play after that.

AQ-128What exactly do I say when I win?#

Say "Mah Jongg" — out loud, the moment your fourteenth tile completes the line — then leave the whole hand face up until someone has checked it.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Lay the tiles in card order with the groups separated, and sandwich any joker between the naturals it stands for, so the table can read your line at a glance.
  • Don't sweep the tiles up early. That's the fastest way to turn a win into an argument.
  • If the winning tile came off someone's discard, call it before the next player draws — once they've drawn, that tile is dead and your chance is gone.

AQ-129Do I have to announce every tile I discard?#

Yes — say the tile's name as you let it go: "three crak," "red dragon."

3 notes · 1 page · 5 phrasings
  • It isn't a rule with a penalty attached; it's table etiquette, and it's what makes calling possible at all.
  • American play has no silent claim and no "ron." If you don't name it, you slow the table and invite disputes.
  • The other half of the habit: never comment on what someone else discarded. Name your own, stay quiet about theirs.

AQ-130How do I host a first game for total beginners?#

You need four things: a 152-tile set with four racks, one current card per player, dice, and a table with room for a square in the middle.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Give a five-minute explanation, not a lecture: the goal, the turn, what a joker does, how calling works. Then deal.
  • Play the first round open-handed so everyone can see a hand being built. Switch to hidden tiles for round two.
  • Name one rule-reader with the cheat sheet in front of them, and settle house rules — second Charleston, stakes, wrong-call penalty — before the first deal, not mid-hand.

AQ-131I'm the slowest player at the table. How do I keep up?#

Decide your direction during the Charleston, then stop re-deciding on every turn.

3 notes · 1 page · 5 phrasings
  • Prop the card open at the one line you're playing instead of scanning all of it. Scanning is what eats the clock.
  • Count to fourteen every turn. Most slowdowns are confusion, not thought.
  • Ask short and fast — "whose turn?", "can I still call that?" A quick question keeps the rhythm; a long silent panic breaks it. And skip the apology tour.

AQ-132Is it rude to ask questions during a hand?#

No. Asking is normal; asking at the wrong moment is the only problem.

3 notes · 1 page · 5 phrasings
  • Mid-hand, ask short factual things — whose turn, whether a tile is still claimable, what a call meant. Those keep the game moving.
  • Save "why did you do that?" and anything about strategy for after the hand. Nobody should be explaining their decisions while three people wait.
  • Never ask what someone is building, and never coach another player mid-hand, even kindly.

AQ-133What age can kids start playing?#

Nothing in the rules sets an age; in practice it's a game for readers, roughly eight and up with an adult sitting alongside.

3 notes · 5 phrasings
  • The barrier isn't arithmetic, it's reading the card and holding fourteen tiles on a rack built for adult hands.
  • Shorten it: play open-handed, skip the Charleston for the first few games, or chase one simple line instead of the whole card.
  • The 152 tiles and eight jokers are a lot to manage physically. A rack and a flat table matter more than the rules do.

AQ-134Is mahjong good for your brain?#

The plausible benefit is social and attentional, not neurological magic.

3 notes · 5 phrasings
  • A cluster-randomized trial in Hong Kong nursing homes — 110 residents, twelve weeks, mahjong compared with tai chi and with simple crafts — found mahjong players held certain cognitive scores while the crafts group declined.
  • That's maintenance in people who already had impairment, not a boost for a healthy adult.
  • The likeliest active ingredient is the hour itself: seated, social, mildly demanding, and repeated weekly. That's a good habit, not a treatment.

AQ-135Does mahjong prevent dementia?#

No. Mahjong does not prevent dementia, and no serious researcher claims it does.

3 notes · 5 phrasings
  • What the trials show is that structured activity can slow decline in some measured domains for people who already have cognitive impairment. Preventing a disease is a different claim.
  • The impressive-sounding risk reductions come from observational studies, where people well enough to play weekly are healthier to begin with. That confound doesn't go away.
  • Treat it as a pleasant, social habit. If you're worried about your memory or someone else's, that's a conversation with a doctor, not a table.

AQ-136Is mahjong good for loneliness, especially for older players?#

Probably yes, and the social part is very likely the mechanism.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Four seats, a fixed weekly time, and a game that pauses for conversation between hands — that's a standing appointment with three other people.
  • It's why the game persists in libraries, JCCs, senior centers and church halls rather than in arcades.
  • The failure mode is the opposite of loneliness: a table that becomes an obligation. Two hours, once a week, is the shape most people sustain.

AQ-137Can I play with low vision or arthritic hands?#

Yes — this is one of the more adaptable table games, once you fix the two things that fight you: the card and the tile size.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • The NMJL sells a large-print card for about $15 against about $14 standard. Buy it. Reading the card is the whole game.
  • Look for tiles around 30 mm and up with engraved, high-contrast faces — printed faces wear smooth and blur across a table.
  • Lighter sets and smooth-gliding pushers matter more than tile weight. Nothing in the game requires fast hand movement, and the click of the tiles is a genuine aid.

AQ-138Is mahjong a gambling game?#

No — it's a social parlor game played for points, and sometimes for small stakes.

3 notes · 2 pages · 5 phrasings
  • Every legal hand has a value printed on the card. Scoring is a lookup in points, not a bet.
  • Many groups never put money on it at all. Where stakes exist they're usually nickels, dimes or quarters per point, and a session settles to a few dollars.
  • Some tables use a "pie" — a capped buy-in so nobody can lose more than they brought. That's a house rule, agreed before the first deal. If a table's stakes make you uneasy, say so early or find another table.
