How the NMJL Charleston works (tap to read)
Source verified against Tom Sloper's American Mahjong FAQ and NMJL procedure.
- First Charleston (mandatory): pass 3 tiles
RIGHT, then 3ACROSS, then 3LEFT. On the LEFT pass you may blind pass — send tiles you just received without looking. - Second Charleston (optional): any player may stop it after the first LEFT pass. If played: 3
LEFT, then 3ACROSS, then 3RIGHT(blind pass allowed on the RIGHT pass). - Courtesy pass (optional): exchange 0–3 tiles with the player directly across.
- Jokers can never be passed during the Charleston. The trainer blocks any Joker you try to send. (Flowers are set aside before the deal and are not part of the 13-tile hand.)
